Baby Sleep! 4 Solutions to Common Bedtime Problems

Image
Every night, the bedtime routine for my child begins really well but somewhere after many stories, some unreasonable requests and a lot of wriggling later, it spirals into insanity. I have to fight monsters who appear only when it's time to close the eyes. I have to oblige to several requests for water until I know I'm being tricked and then have to put on a stern face. There are times when I have to lay still and lifeless for hours, like a mummy, hoping my son will fall asleep only to creep out later to find him wide awake. Then there are nights when he will cry and get clingy simply because he wants no one else but ME to hold on to, to pull my face, pinch my eyelids, basically feel my presence as he falls asleep. Sleeptime is one of the biggest mysteries that can never be easily solved. Encouraging my son to read has been very important. Has it been easy? Not really but the key is to never give up. I began when he was six months. I read the same book everyday and then we began to build our little library of books. Initially, I could not tell if he liked reading or tearing the pages 😂 So his earlier books are covered with cellotape and bear testement of being ripped. A couple months back we began 'reading time' - any time during the day when he would haul all his books out and place them on a table and pretend he was reading. Last night after almost a year of bedtime stories and for the first time he chose the book he wanted and brought it to me! Reading..it's never too early to start and never too late to begin- Maria DeRosario Picture: He's learning to point out alphabets and the newspaper has been a very cool start!

In the past two years, I look back and feel I should have been better prepared - and not just with my hospital bag and checklist for baby. I should have made a big list of situations I would face as a new mom and how exactly I would cope in those (sometimes) despairing moments. As new parents, you will feel over the moon one moment and quite fearful the next when you think about the responsibilities ahead. It's absolutely normal and while effectively communicating your needs with each other is important, it's also vital not to panic but be rational as you face the many (if I may say) roller coaster moments as new parents. Here are five situations that may seem trivial but are the most important challenges to address as you become parents, especially for the first time. 1. In the first few weeks, babies cry a lot, sleep less and are hungry all the
